Stretch Art — Words

In the Words series, the possibility of using 22 points is extended to writing. Each word has to be constructed anew: the familiar shapes of letters are altered by the limited number of points and the ways in which they can be connected. Here, a word is not reproduced in a predetermined form but emerges each time as a geometric construction.

At first, I wrote the French names of objects directly on them: arbre, table, porte, pont, pilier, banc, mur... This was both an attempt to describe the new world around me and an exercise in a new language. In this way, I established a connection between the signified and the signifier. Later, I became interested in less concrete words: liens, monde, entier, la paix, après. At this point, writing begins to function not only as the naming of things but also as the construction of meaning.

At the same time, a word here is never permanently fixed or held under a single, unchanging tension: the strength of the material, time, weather conditions, and even the surface on which I have left the word all play a role. When a rubber band breaks, it does not merely damage the construction of the word; it changes its meaning. A letter may lose part of its form, a connection between elements may disappear, and the word may become difficult or almost impossible to read. Loss and disintegration are part of its structure as possible states.
