Utopos 22 — Concept
Utopos 22
2024–2026 · La Tannerie, Rhizome · Avallon, France
Utopos 22 emerged from the convergence of two lines of my artistic practice. The first is Utopos, the idea of a non-existent place in which a person consciously situates themselves through thought. The second is 22, a finite set of points adopted as the basis for constructing relations and structures. Brought together in a single name, they formed a kind of address: a non-existent place given a number.
The opportunity to realize this idea arose in Avallon, when the Rhizome association offered me a studio at La Tannerie. For the exhibition Après, I transformed the room into a white cube. Initially, it was a space intended for a single project, but gradually it began to acquire a significance of its own, extending beyond its original purpose.

After transformation, 2024

Group exhibition, Utopos 22, La Tannerie, Avallon, 2026
Working on the empty room turned out to be more than a technical preparation. The white cube interested me as a space in which an artwork could exist even before taking material form. Here, I could mentally position a work, change its scale, examine the relationships between its elements, and imagine different possibilities for something that had not yet been realized. Emptiness became not an absence of content, but a condition for its possible emergence. Transforming the studio was also a practice of mentally trying out ideas within this emptiness.
Utopos 22 became an experimental space for me, a kind of laboratory where I could realize things I had previously had no opportunity to attempt. It hosted my solo exhibitions and group exhibitions that I organized, while artistic gestures that had previously found no place could take visible form here. The significance of the space was not limited to hosting exhibitions. It allowed me to define the conditions of artistic work independently, testing ideas and ways of realizing them without being restricted to a predetermined format.
Utopos 22 at La Tannerie came to an end in 2026, but the project itself is not tied exclusively to this location. It may continue elsewhere, for a different duration and on a different scale, since Utopos 22 has no fixed spatial form that must be preserved or reproduced. Each new place will begin with an attempt to discover how that place can come into being as an artistic space.
